German Armed Forces: Messenger for military communication

Together with the Cyber Innovation Hub of the German Armed Forces, stashcat offers a secure communication channel - not only when deployed abroad, but also at home. Secure use on the soldiers' official and private devices is made possible in particular by end-to-end encryption and mobile application management (MAM). In addition to existing communication channels for exchanging information via e-mail, telephone or wireless connection, stashcat has a decisive advantage: Both on the computer in the office and on mobile devices such as smartphones, certain open information can now be passed on in encrypted form - and thus securely. However, the messenger is also suitable as a means of directly exchanging time-critical and relevant information. At the same time, it by no means replaces IT information technology for operations management.

Customer Story German Armed Forces

The German Armed Forces use the messenger stashcat as BwChat

Messenger services have become an indispensable part of everyday life. Both privately and in the working world of the Bundeswehr, they offer an effective way to communicate that everyone can use. The Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr (CIHBw), the innovation unit of BWI GmbH, is providing messenger technology for communication in the armed forces as part of an innovation project. Together with stashcat GmbH, the secure messenger BwChat was designed for the Bundeswehr.

Precisely in order to create secure communication for openly classified official messages during the Corona pandemic, the Bundeswehr extended the pilot operation of BwChat at short notice. For the duration of the restrictions associated with COVID-19, employees of the Bundeswehr can use the messenger BwChat via private devices. BwChat can be downloaded from the usual app stores in compliance with data protection and GDPR requirements and enables fast, simple communication in times of COVID-19.

Particularly in the official context within the German Armed Forces and the military, special attention is paid here to data protection and data security. In addition, the following features are a main component of BwChat.

Channel communication with 50,000 users

All users can participate in the same chat group. In this way, over 50,000 users can be reached at once. If desired, also as top-down communication via read-only channel - without unwanted discussions.

Mobile number independent

BwChat does not require access to the phone book. Cell phone change? No problem.

Zitat_Bundeswehr
In the German Armed Forces, we were faced with the challenge that not every soldier has a mobile device for business use, and at the same time the need for a secure means of communication for every soldier was and is very high. That's where the idea came from to extend such a means of communication to private devices in order to reach as many people as possible.

Since November 2018, the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub has therefore been testing the market-ready secure messaging service BwChat in close cooperation with KdoCIR. This was developed based on the app stashcat from the company stashcat GmbH and serves the soldiers as a secure and legal means of communication and collaboration on private devices.

A special feature of stashcat is that this service does not share metadata. With the help of metadata, companies can determine, for example, for advertising purposes, who writes with whom, when and with what frequency - a real problem from a military perspective.

To this end, BwChat has all the usual functionalities of modern messaging services: private and group messages, texts, images and videos can be exchanged, among other things. To date, almost 50,000 soldiers use the app to communicate with each other on duty.
